Anchored by Benicio Del Toro's affable/confused/nurturing/stoned performance, this potentially dreadfully maudlin story of a heroin addict attorney (you read that right) comforting a lonely widow (Halle Berry, lost in a storm of grief) in a copasetic Seattle overcomes its limitations and then some. In Denmark-to-Hollywood director Susanne Bier's gently oblique romance, written for the screen by Allan Loeb, junkie lawyer Jerry kicks one habit and acquires another —- watched over by the flashback ghost of Audrey's deceased husband, the nicest guy who ever lived (David Duchovny). Hats off to the organic acting of Del Toro, Berry, the two little kids, and Alison Lohman as Jerry's monkey-on-her-back group therapy mate
