There Was a Camel Walking Down the Street in Concord Yesterday

This delightful story comes to us via Claycord, which first reported on it last night: Apparently, the camel, whose SF Weekly reveals is Rudy, got out of his cage and was first spotted on Bailey Road around 3 p.m. yesterday. According to Claycord'e eyewitness testimony,

Today at 3:15 PM Bailey the camel was out on the road [...] Citizens were out on the street helping traffic get by while protecting [the camel]. As a result there are some long lines in both directions. Just as we were driving by a police officer was arriving on the scene.

Drivers are urged to always obey the speed limit, or less driving along Bailey Road. You never know what may be just around the corner. It may be a camel!

Indeed! Rudy was reportedly taken to safety soon thereafter — until he got loose again around 6:45 and was hit by a minivan. (The Merc reports that Rudy is fine.) And there's your weird news for today.

History-laden thrillers, intellectual capers, a romantic heroine with a Ph.D, a murder mystery penned by a MacArthur Genius: This summer’s best books — many of which have local authors and settings — are equal parts brainy and beachy.
