Re: “Yelp and the Business of Extortion 2.0

After being cheated by Diamond Certified [a Yelp-type site, paid for exclusively by businesses, but portrayed as a selfless customer service], I wrote a review in Yelp.

Yelp deleted my review, sending me an email saying things that were clearly untrue regarding my review. I wrote back, showing them my review, and challenging them to prove their assertions. They haven't responded, and I don't expect they will.

There are quite a few sites like Yelp and Diamond Certified, which scam customers by manipulating reviews [deleting negative reviews, fabricating good reviews, hiding your negative review from the public but not from your own computer, so you think everyone else sees your review like you do, etc.]

The only way you can be sure that a review site represents YOU instead of someone else, is to find one that charges you a subscription fee. In other words, they work for you, like Consumer Reports.

Angie's List is one site that charges about $10 a year. There may be others like it, I don't know. But I've used both Diamond Certified and Yelp, and I have found both of them to be lacking in ethics. I subscribe to Angie's List now. They're good [an nobody is compensating me in any way to say any of this].

Like I said, there may be other subscriber-paid sites like Angie's List. But the old adage that "you get what you pay for" especially applies to sites like Yelp and Diamond Certified. Sure, they're "free" to customers. But the people who benefit are the clients who pay to be listed -- and who pay extra to have bad reviews deleted. They are advertising sites falsely masquerading as consumer help sites.

Don't trust them if you're not paying them! They work for whoever pays them. Caveat emptor.
