Well they are pretty different!! but i agree with many of the above comments!! but if i take out the fact that the mars volta was created to break the bounds of genres and all that .. i can surelly say that TMV is better 'cause they made something purely new, wich very difficult to do in this time, that ROCKS! and the very admirable fact that their influences aren't other musicians! that is pretty original!! and whatever is original ROCKS harder than a flute!! kome'on, they're out of bounds!! no one would be able to put them in one of those stereotypes of genre!

P.d: They remind me sometimes like a hybrid between Pink Floyd's psychedelic with Led Zeppelin's Heavy Rock!! (cause they aren't metal), but i don'ttry to classify TMV in any of those i simply enjoy them!!
P.d: I don't think jethro tullis a bad band but comparing them with somthing as revolutionary as TMV is useless!!
