Rated R · 105 minutes · 2009

Mickey Rourke redeems himself from his Mickey Rourke-ness with this remarkable portrayal of a man not unlike himself: a forty-something, steroid-ridden, broken-down pro wrestler who barely gets by, working low-end jobs and living in a trailer. There's a stripper with a heart of gold (Marisa Tomei, also good) and the wrestler's estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood), but even weighted down with clichés, Rourke's good-natured agony as Randy “The Ram” shines as one of his best perfs. The Mick is finally back. Robert D. Siegel wrote the screenplay and Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) squeezes every ounce of juice out of the beat-out situations (109 min.).
