Meg Ryan and Annette Bening tie on the feed bag in a gutless, brainless, Chick-Flick-in-Excelsis remake of the old Clare Boothe Luce adaptation about New York females swarming around a rich woman (Ryan) whose husband is cheating on her. Where the 1939 Luce/George Cukor version treated most of its socialite characters with comic contempt, the update — rewritten and directed by Diane English of TV’s Murphy Brown — actually seems to admire its. Why? Also hamming in the all-woman cast are Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, Bette Midler, Debra Messing, Candice Bergen, Cloris Leachman, and Debi Mazar, as Tanya the manicurist (114 min.).
