In 1962 Paris, a fastidious landlord (Fabrice Luchini) and his family hire a Spanish-immigrant housemaid named Maria (Natalia Verbeke), the boss gets the hots for her, and then he suddenly develops an interest in Spanish culture and workers’ rights. If this weren’t such a namby-pamby sitcom with cardboard-cutout characters in the first place, it would be borderline offensive, especially when we factor in French anti-immigrant attitudes of the time, the racism of the landlord’s supercilious wife (Sandrine Kiberlaine), and the landlord’s implied noblesse oblige for coming to Maria’s aid. A puzzler, written and directed by veteran cinéaste Philippe Le Guay. Also with Carmen Maura. (104 min.)

Cast: Fabrice Luchini, Sandrine Kiberlain, Natalia Verbeke, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Berta Ojea, Concha Galán, Marie-Armelle Deguy, Muriel Solvay, Audrey Fleurot, Annie Mercier and Nuria Solé
