Horror, Thriller
Quite the gothic renaissance. Actor Daniel Radcliffe, on the rebound from eleven years of Harry Potter, cuts a convincing Victorian figure as an unwanted visitor in this heavily atmospheric wall-groaner and door-slammer, set in an old dark house in the North of England. Dead children abound, especially when the spectral title matron appears. The film is also part of a continuing comeback for venerable Hammer Film Productions, with all the marvelously detailed production values that made that company famous. Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, and Sophie Stuckey turn in well wrought histrionic performances as well. What an antidote to the cute Victoriana of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes series. Directed with flair by James Watkins (Eden Lake), from a screenplay by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), adapted from a gothic novel by English author Susan Hill. (95 min.)
