Biography, Comedy drama
Is Martin Scorsese out of ideas? It appears so, on the evidence of this hyper-active, hypo-inventive tale of an ultra-crass stock market con man (Leonardo DiCaprio, at ramming speed and dripping testosterone) who fleeced thousands of investors, snorted hills of cocaine, and boffed hundreds of hookers in the 1990s with his financial comrades Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Spike Jonze, Jon Favreau, and Jean Dujardin. A great director is entitled to make a turkey once in a while. This is Scorsese’s, featuring the worst writing he has ever been associated with – screenplay by Terence Winter, from the book by convicted securities hustler Jordan Belfort. Goodfellas with nerds. A clowns’ Casino. The Bowery Boys Wreck the Stock Market. Also with Margot Robbie, Joanna Lumley, and Kyle Chandler. Did we mention that it’s an hour too long, with needlessly stretched-out scenes? Unload it at a loss, but unload it (165 min.).
