The Carter Family from Maces Springs, Virginia brought their down-home brand of Appalachian Mountain singing and guitar picking to American record buyers and radio listeners in the 1930s, and thus – according to Beth Harrington’s soul-satisfying documentary – started country music as we know it today. Filmmaker Harrington assembles the Carters’ long and winding story using vintage film footage, imaginative animation, and the participation of such C&W luminaries as Kris Kristofferson, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sheryl Crow, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Prine, George Jones, Rosanne Cash, and her father Johnny Cash, who married into the family and performs with several generations of Carters in one of his last film appearances. This richly textured doc is a treasure of folkloric Americana (92 min.). (K.V.)
