The Waverly Gallery at Contra Costa Civic Theatre or The Cherry Orchard at Town Hall Theater Staff Pick

Price: $11-$32
Buy a ticket to see a regional theater company show this week. Your dollars might be the only way to combat California’s ill-advised AB5, a new law meant to protect gig-workers that manages to slay freelance actors, writers, musicians and small theater, dance and music companies and the like. Two suggestions among many possible: CCCT’s The Waverly Gallery, Oscar-winner Kenneth Lonergan’s semi-autobiographical play about his grandmother’s art gallery and her yuppification resistance to a coffee shop takeover. At Town Hall Theater in Lafayette, there’s Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. A new translation based on the playwright’s 1903 pre-rehearsal script brings fresh insights to the classic story of love, loss, and the tumult of homecoming. Don’t be shy or stingy: see both. Supporting local theater means more now than ever before.
