The Warlocks

When: Thu., July 30, 8:30 p.m. 2009
Price: $12

If Brits My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain are credited with swiping the Velvet Underground's template for droning, reverb-drenched psychedelia laden with druggy overtones, then credit The Warlocks for repossessing the genre for the colonies. Ever since mastermind Bobby Hecksher and his fuzz-rock posse issued its self-titled EP in 2001, the Warlocks have gone through the ups-and-downs of trying to grab a bit of commercial success via a failed stint with Mute Records that eventually found them landing on Tee Pee Records, the former label of old buddies The Brian Jonestown Massacre. With The Mirror Explodes, the L.A.-based quintet has gone down a deeper, darker and more gorgeous wormhole lined with beautifully cacophonous soundscapes and hypnotically meandering bits of guitar twang all wrapped around Hecksher's ethereal vocals. Expect a considerably more heightened degree of shoe-gazer space-rock on Thursday, July 30, at the Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St., San Francisco). 8:30 p.m., $12.
