Adventure, Biography, Drama
Dramatization of the real-life 1974 high-wire daredevil walk between the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center by French aerial artist Philippe Petit finds those hard-to-reach places the documentary version of the same stunt – 2008’s Man on Wire – cannot, courtesy director Robert Zemeckis. Sweaty palms all around as the maker of Forrest Gump and Back to the Future and his effects crew take us to the dizzying heights of the now-vanished WTC, and even if actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt annoys with his awful French act, we get the point of Petit’s adventure – to bring a smile to the faces of his audience, 1,363 feet below. Apt character support by César Domboy, Benedict Samuel, James Badge Dale, Steve Valentine, hammy Ben Kingsley, and love interest Charlotte Bon. Screenplay by Zemeckis and Christopher Browne, adapted from Petit’s book, To Reach the Clouds (123 min.).
