The US Drug Czar's Twitter Wins the Award For Most Orwellian Newspeak

This week, the U.S. Conference of Mayors — representing 1,309 cities with a population of 30,000 or more — unanimously approved a resolution calling on the United States government to cease its immoral, racially biased, disastrously failed eighty-year war on marijuana.

Well, the Office of National Drug Control Policy — aka the Drug Czar — has responded to the U.S. Conference of Mayors via Twitter thanking them for supporting the Drug War.

“Thank you, @USmayors, for unanimously supporting the Administration's approach to #DrugPolicyReform.”

What? Did the Mayors stutter? Their resolution called for an end to federal interference in state efforts to regulate cannabis use, changing the Controlled Substances Act, and reclassifying pot to something not equivalent to heroin or LSD.

In what drug-addled brain does that resolution equate to “supporting the Administration's approach”?

Oh, yeah, we forgot. The Drug Czar said in 2009 that the war on marijuana is over.

What does this new peace look like, you may ask? About 800,000 citizens arrested annually, tens of thousands in cages on marijuana offenses, hundreds of businesses closed, and countless properties seized, and let's not forget the routine killing of marijuana involved citizens — like this 80 year-old man who police shot and killed in his own home during a pot growing raid this morning in L.A.
