Biography, Documentary, War
Director Bill Siegel’s first-rate documentary contribution to the growing catalogue of films on the life of the iconic heavyweight boxing champion investigates – using rare archival footage and contemporary talking heads – how Ali’s Nation of Islam faith and his refusal to be drafted to fight in the Vietnam war changed both his career and American society. Ali’s “exile years,” circa 1967-70, are outlined by a rainbow of loquacious sources, including his brother Rahaman Ali, New York Times reporter Robert Lipsyte, and Ali’s second wife, Khalilah Camacho-Ali. But as usual the most compelling voice is Ali’s own, in vintage newsreels – a prophet for his times (86 min.).
Director: Bill Siegel
Producer: Leon Gast, Justine Nagan, Gordon Quinn, Kat White and Rachel Pikelny
