When football-star-turned-soldier Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan in 2004, the Army (and higher-ups in the Bush White House) were eager to anoint him a valiant war hero – even though Tillman was shot by members of his own Rangers fire team in an apparent case of “fratricide” (aka friendly fire). The Pentagon even tried to cover up the details of his death. But the liberal-minded San Jose-area Tillman family refused to let Pat's memory become “all tidy and mythic,” and launched its own inquiry. This damning doc by Amir Bar-Lev (My Kid Could Paint That) explains the real Pat Tillman as a man who read Noam Chomsky and had big doubts, after he joined up, about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Call it “anti-mythic.” Written by Mark Monroe (94 min.).
