Writer-director David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) and co-writer Ken Marino based this anthology of darkly satiric sketches on the Ten Commandments, though the biblical connection is sometimes so loose it barely seems to apply. The best sketches are a wicked sendup of celebrity worship, with Adam Brody as a skydiving casualty; a story about a virginal librarian (Gretchen Mol) who finds personal salvation in the arms of a Mexican handyman named Jesus (Justin Theroux); and a bit about a sullen detective (Liev Schreiber, very funny) who covets his neighbor's goods so badly that he self-destructs. Wain and Marino try to tie all this together with a framing narrative about an unfaithful husband (Paul Rudd), which turns into a clever parody of Woody Allen movies.
