Romance
Filmmaker Julie Taymor returns, winningly, to the Shakespeare catalog with her typical visually lush interpretation and a surprise: Her main character, the exiled sorcerer Prospero, has become a woman, Prospera, played by Helen Mirren. Mirren, one of the most enchanting actors in film, is supported by a full cast of costumed strutters and fretters: David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Tom Conti, Alan Cumming, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, Reeve Carney, Felicity Jones, and Ben Whishaw in the unexpectedly meaty role of Prospera’s will o’ the wisp genie/gofer, Ariel. Compared to Taymor’s Titus, or even her Across the Universe, this production seems intentionally stripped down to its language and performances-- good thing they’re both rich and colorful. Directed and adapted by Taymor. (110 min.)
