The Summer Slaughter Tour ft. Between the Buried and Me & more Staff Pick One Day Only

When: Fri., Aug. 10, 2 p.m. 2018
Phone: 510-356-4000
Price: $30
Thanks to Between the Buried and Me, headliners of extreme-metal music festival Summer Slaughter, you can bang your head in an enlightened fashion. The North Carolina quintet is the full progressive package: technical mastery, agile aggression, and song architectures you don’t see often in metal — extreme or otherwise. Hook-filled release Automata II, which just dropped last month, dabbles with cabaret pianos and big-band horn arrangements but always rears its brutal head before getting too Broadway. From metalcore to tech death, a solid block of subgenres is repped at this year’s Slaughter, which is now in its 11th year. Veil of Maya and Born of Osiris are the primary “djent” exponents. If the so-called style’s signature choppy, palm-muted guitars have become cliché, these two bands offer enough twists to earn their status as pillars of the scene. Get there early for Entheos (featuring ex-members of San Francisco’s late Animosity), who work trippy samples into the guitar growl. And finally, heads up Swedish death-metal fans: Soreption’s complex-yet-groovy riffs are addictive.
