A cheating husband gets rid of his “inconvenient wife” by conspiring with a religious leader to get her condemned to death by stoning. Welcome to Islamic-revolutionary Iran circa 1979, one of the world’s hot spots for such atrocities. And welcome to Outrage Porn, deftly wielded by director Cyrus Nowrasteh, following journalist Freidoune Shabjam’s book (adapted by Betsy Giffen Nowrasteh, wife of the filmmaker) in showing how male-dominated religious hysteria intersects with plain old lust. The actual stoning of the unfortunate Soraya (Iranian-American actor Mozhan Marnó) goes on a long time, with spurting blood and multiple camera angles to catch each individual rock striking her head, so be prepared. A strange and repugnant piece of work, almost an anti-Islamist-Iranian agit-prop. Hmmm. Costarring Shohreh Aghdashloo as the witness, Jim Caviezel as a reporter, and Ali Pourtash as the nefarious mullah (116 min.).
