The Stairwell Sisters

When: Sat., Oct. 11, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $10

The Stairwell Sisters and the Earl Brothers are a perfect pairing. Between them they can play in almost every folk style extant, including old-time fiddle tunes, honky-tonk country, bluegrass, blues, and folk. And let's not forget Sister Evie Laden's clog dancing, an art on the verge of extinction. The Sisters don't actually update old-time music, but they play it with an infectious energy that's all their own. Get Off Your Money, their new CD, was produced by roots mastermind Lloyd Maines, and it's a hoot from start to finish. The darkness of the Earl Brothers is a perfect complement to the sunny style of the Stairwells. Their hardcore approach and the sinister singing of Bobby Earl Davis give the band's music a vaguely menacing edge, even as it pulls you on to the dance floor for a lively two-step. They play Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). 9:30 p.m., $10.
