Superlative Australian neo-noir has everything you’d ever need for a delightfully dismal tale of deceit and murder: Ray, a cheating husband who also takes kickbacks at his construction firm (David Roberts); his younger girlfriend Carla (Claire van der Boom), who always wants a little more out of any situation than what she’s getting; Claire’s jealous, dope-dealing husband, Greg (Anthony Hayes); and an undependable arsonist named Billy (played by co-screenwriter Joel Edgerton) and his even dodgier girlfriend/accomplice Lily (Hanna Mangan Lawrence). Put into a lower-middle-class “ocker” setting and push the “Puree” button. The Edgerton brothers – director Phil and writer Joel – will probably be compared to the Coens, but even though their filmmaking debut bears a slight thematic resemblance to Blood Simple, the Edgertons’ approach is sweatier and more basic by far. Writer Matthew Dabner helped adapt Joel E’s original story. Also on the bill in selected engagements is the Edgertons’ brutal 2007 slapstick short, The Spider (105 min.).
