The Specials

When: Sat., May 25, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $45.00
Ska music was born in Jamaica in the ’50s, but the reason its spread all over the world is because of a late ’70s British band, The Specials. Keyboardist Jerry Dammers had a vision for The Specials, and a handful of other ska bands for his label 2Tone, to revive this dead upbeat Jamaican dance music; mix it with punk rock; and jumble the fashion and culture of ska, punks, mods and skinheads and create a revival of a subculture that never existed. Most importantly, 2Tone ska was intentionally political music. The Specials and the other 2Tone bands were major pop stars in England for a short couple of years, though over here in the States, they were cult acts. It wasn’t until the ’90s when more American bands, inspired in a large part by The Specials, started to play ska that American audiences went crazy for the band.
