Crime drama, Mystery, Thriller
Incoherent scenario, clumsy dialogue, corny characters, career-worst acting performances – this grisly winter-weather crime “thriller” by Swedish international director Tomas Alfredson has it all. Someone is killing and mutilating women (plus the odd man or two) in Norway, and leaving forlorn-looking snowmen outside as a calling card. A pair of compromised police detectives (Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson), and a gruesome lot of suspects (Val Kilmer, Chloë Sevigny, J.K. Simmons, David Dencik, Toby Jones, Jonas Karlsson, et al) get involved. And we end up wishing we’d gone out for a slushy instead. Adapted from a novel by Jo Nesbø by writers Peter Straughan, Hossein Amini, and Søren Sveistrup. Saving graces: Charlotte Gainsbourg (the male cop’s ex) and the icy Norwegian landscape.
