Souls in torment infest this iffy German crime drama, which links two murders of teenage girls, 23 years apart. Caught up in the aftermath of the crimes are an emotionally overwrought police detective named David (Sebastian Blomberg) and Timo (Wotan Wilke Möhring), a weak-willed individual haunted by guilt. Director Baran bo Odar, working from a script he adapted from Jan Costin Wagner’s novel, benefits from the performances of Blomberg and Möhring and Nikolaus Sommerer’s stunning cinematography – too bad the plot machinations don’t compare. Ulrich Thomsen costars memorably as the creepy culprit. (119 min.)
