The Short Life of José Antonio Gutierrez

Tackling such thorny issues as military recruitment, immigration, and the ever-quixotic "American dream," Heidi Specogna's documentary The Short Life of José Antonio Gutierreztells the story of an indigent kid from Guatemala who became the first soldier killed in the US-Iraq War. It screens Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the Oakland Public Library's Cesar Chavez Branch (3301 E. 12th St., Ste. 271, Oakland), as part of a monthly film series sponsored by BAY-Peace. The free event for teens starts at 4 p.m. and includes complimentary soda and popcorn. Audience members are invited to stick around afterward and discuss the themes of the film. BayPeace.org
