Fantasy, Romance
Filmmaker Guillermo de Toro is in a romantic mood with this splendid fable about a lowly cleaning woman named Elisa (Sally Hawkins) who falls in love with a terrifying-but-sweet captured amphibian man (Doug Jones), being held captive in the sinister government laboratory where Elisa and her workmate (Octavia Spencer) mop floors. The chameleonic Hawkins takes acting honors alongside Michael Shannon, as the lab’s brutal overlord – with high marks for Paul D. Austerberry’s production design and Alexandre Desplat’s music score. Writer-director del Toro’s rethinking of a Fifties-style sci-fi yarn puts its emphasis where the story needed it the most – on the awakening of late-blooming wallflower Elisa. Who knew del Toro had this kind of romance in him? Terrific support playing by Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg (123 min., 2017, rated R)
