Adventure, Anime, Fantasy
A lonely, sickly teenage boy named Shawn discovers Arrietty, a tiny teenage girl, as he recuperates in a country house. She’s one of the “Borrowers,” a race of miniature people who live under the floorboards and pilfer household items from the “Beings,” and their budding friendship is doomed from the start. Perhaps. This charming yet basically pessimistic animated fable from Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli is written by Ghibli mastermind Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away) with Keiko Niwa, and co-directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Gary Rydstrom, who handles the American version (there’s a separate UK version). It’s probably the quietest, calmest, and most melancholy tale in the Ghibli catalog, despite the welcome hamming of Carol Burnett as Haru, the capriciously cruel housekeeper. As such, young children used to hyperactive mainstream entertainment may wander off. The idea is to slow down, listen, and observe. What a novelty. Starring the voices of Bridgit Mendler (Arrietty) and David Henrie (Shawn). The screenplay is adapted from Mary Norton’s previously filmed novel The Borrowers, with the American version written by Karey Kirkpatrick. (94 min.)
