The School for Scandal

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. Continues through May 10 2008
Price: $15-$25

Danville's Role Players Ensemble Theatre wraps up Sue Trigg's first season as artistic director with a play that's just a year younger than the Declaration of Independence. Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy of manners The School for Scandal satirizesthe gossipy two-facedness of civilized society -- which of course is strictly a thing of the past -- in which reputations are slandered, fortunes are squandered, a great deal of woo is pitched, and people are not at all what they seem. (Their names, however, are exactly what they seem, as Lady Sneerwell, Sir Benjamin Backbite, and Mrs. Candour can attest.) Director Trigg has decided to set the play in the 1930s rather than the late 18th century, because really, why not? April 18 through May 10 at the Village Theatre (233 Front St., Danville).DanvilleTheatre.com or 925-314-3400.
