Comedy, Drama
Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman get a workout as Wendy and Jon, a pair of not-so-lovable-loser siblings obligated to put their estranged, agitated father (Philip Bosco, pathetically perfect) into a nursing home to keep him from smearing shit on the wall. Which means we’re treated to the lighter side of senile dementia. Or is it the dark side of the American family? All that sister-brother dysfunctionality gives writer-director Tamara Jenkins (Slums of Beverly Hills) plenty of chances for bitter, introspective, semi-comic dialogue, and both Linney and Hoffman take full advantage. The question is the same one we ask ourselves at Thanksgiving: How much time do we really want to spend with these people? Not for everyone, just those with families (113 min.).
