Johnny Depp reprises his screen portrayal of his friend, author Hunter S. Thompson – after 1998’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas — in this languidly paced but genuinely funny adaptation of the late Thompson’s novel about a journeyman writer named Paul Kemp (Depp), circa 1960, who takes a reporter’s job at a failing daily newspaper in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His misadventures there, as depicted by director Bruce Robinson (he made the marvelous Withnail & I), have all the nervous energy of Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing with half the wowie-zowie factor, as Kemp tangles with his editor (Richard Jenkins), real-estate hustlers (Aaron Eckhart among them), hostile locals, unhinged colleagues (including Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Rispoli), and a hyper-sexy blond trophy wife (Amber Heard). A refreshing change of pace for Depp and a welcome comeback for Robinson. (120 min.)
