Drama, Western
Using non-actors to tell the story of an injured South Dakota cowboy (Brady Jandreau) and his recovery from a near-fatal rodeo accident, filmmaker Chloé Zhao paints a striking and ultimately moving portrait of fly-over America, from the perspective of people who live close to the land. Jandreau’s charisma is undeniable as he basically plays himself – the calm, confident, but wounded horse whisperer who would probably rather die than not be around his four-legged friends. Writer-director Zhao, a native of China film-schooled in the US, displays a gratifying affinity for wide-open spaces and the plain-spoken people who live there. A welcome surprise (103 min., 2017, rated R)
