Adventure, Historical drama, Western
Realistic outdoor hardships and richly textured suffering highlight Alejandro González Iñárritu’s exciting western, which pits frontier hunter Leonard DiCaprio against a succession of scoundrels led by surly fur trapper Tom Hardy, a band of hostile Native Americans, and one mean mama bear. The name of the game is revenge. Director Iñárritu (Birdman), working off a screenplay he and Mark L. Smith adapted from Michael Punke’s novel, fills the two-and-a-half-hour running time with nonstop action in a cruel Rocky Mountain winter setting, with able support acting by Domhnall Gleeson and Forrest Goodluck, superlative camera work by Emmanuel Lubezki, and an eerie music score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bryce Dessner, and Alva Noto. A fine example of the “new western,” determined to reflect the true squalor and viciousness of the 19th-century American West (156 min.).
