The Revelations featuring Tre Williams

When: Thu., May 31, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $7, $10

Tre Williams once contributed hooks to hip-hop tunes by Petey Pablo and Nas, but these days he's delivering mostly original neo-soul numbers in gritty, church-chiseled, low-tenor tones akin to those of Anthony Hamilton. Retro-soul might be a better tag, however, since the Florida-born singer and his band reach way back to deep-fried Southern soul sounds of the Seventies. The Revelations feature plenty of biting blues guitar work by Wes Mingus, noted for his recordings with Wu-Tang Clan, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Bill Laswell.  And they often dig into four-on-floor Memphis grooves, which isn't surprising since much of the group's current CD, Concrete Blues, was cut by co-producer Boo Mitchell at Royal Studios, the same place where Al Green made all his big hits with Boo's late dad Willie. They'll play at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Thursday, May 31. 9 p.m. $7-$10.
