Fascinating American-produced documentary not only blames the Nazi Germans for systematically plundering Europe's art treasures during WWII, it also shows how other combatants, including the United States, took part in destroying frescoes, architecture, and other cultural riches — the collateral damage of their campaigns against the enemy. But of course, it was Hitler, Goering, and company who hid paintings and other stolen artworks in castles and hollowed-out mountains, and who diverted a significant measure of the German war effort toward looting art from Jews, Poles, and other victims. Directors Richard Berge, Bonni Cohen, and Nicole Newnham also chronicle the work of the US Army's "Monument Men" of art historians in uniform, who rescued countless objets d'art. Leave it to another film to determine the ultimate worth of the Euro cultural canon — this is just a good detective story.
