Action, Crime drama, Martial arts
On the heels of his frantic Indonesian actioner The Raid, filmmaker Gareth Evans picks up the story of combative Jakarta police officer Rama (martial arts star Iko Uwais), this time in deep cover as a gangster intent on infiltrating the tangled affairs of a crime boss. Bodies fall like raindrops. Expat writer-director Evans and his star Uwais are sincerely trying to launch their own idiosyncratic style of punch-and-slice, based on the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat and peppered with lickety-split fight scenes featuring performers Yayan Ruhian, Alex Abbad, Arifin Putra, Tio Pakusadewo, and Julie Estelle, the “Hammer Girl.” Mission accomplished. A new level of screen ultra-violence, with a welcome, unexpected dimension of characterization (148 min.).
