Jackie Siegel, the free-spending wife of a timeshare tycoon, doesn’t have much in common with Marie Antoinette besides her ostentatious shopping habits – Jackie is just too nice. That’s what gives filmmaker Lauren Greenfield’s documentary its extra dimension. We can chortle at the family’s tacky conspicuous consumption, but when they lose almost everything in the economic meltdown, we actually feel sorry for them, with their unfinished 90,000-square-foot palace and their neglected exotic pets. Greenfield’s thoughtful doc, ostensibly a freak show of Sunbelt nouveau-riche folly, is actually a reaffirmation of the classic American egalitarian spirit. The Siegels aren’t all that different from you and me. And besides, it’s therapeutic to laugh at the rich. (100 min.)
