Robin Wright Penn burns a hole in the screen as a sort of exalted alley cat — she’s been around, and is now hitched to a successful book editor (Alan Arkin, sublime as usual) and living with him in a dull suburban New York retirement community. And then aging bad boy Keanu Reeves shows up. Sounds like a daytime drama scenario, but writer-director Rebecca (Personal Velocity, The Ballad of Jack and Rose) Miller, adapting her own novel, has the wisdom to cut Wright Penn loose and let her yodel in the wilderness. Ditto the horny and/or harried supporting cast, Pippa’s flashback peanut gallery: Maria Bello, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci, Zoe Kazan. Sophisticated trash is better than coffee-table tastefulness every time (98 min.).
