The Pop Group

When: Wed., March 11, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $29-$35
Formed in the late 1970s, Bristol post-punk outfit The Pop Group, which plays at the Great American Music Hall (859 O’Farrell St., San Francisco) on Wednesday, issued a high mark of the era, Y, in 1979. After punk liberated young musicians from the bondage of virtuosity, commercial pandering, and record industry immersion, many bands went ahead and severed their ties to the already-codified musical conventions of punk. Industrial music started to rumble, early drum machines introduced a steady pulse, synthesizers sometimes supplanted guitars, and elements of genres such as dub reggae and funk appeared. The Pop Group’s Y was an amalgam of the era’s many experimental impulses, coupling pan-continental influences with vocalist Mark Stewart’s agitprop fixations and beat poetics. In 2010, the band reformed, most recently releasing a collection of previously released material and a new album, Citizen Zombie.
