Comedy, Drama
Venkatesh, a hotel “room boy” in the Southern India city of Panjim, Goa, becomes enchanted by an inviting swimming pool belonging to a local man, and especially by the man’s lovely daughter. But Chris Smith’s delicate, delicious fable is not a romance, at least not of the conventional kind. Smith, a maker of socially conscious documentaries (The Yes Men, American Movie), takes pains to show us how Venkatesh and his friend Jhangir make their meager livings, and how the pool owner’s preachy advice changes the young man’s outlook on life. Nana Patekar is the only professional actor in Smith’s remarkable cast (95 min.).
