The Playboy of the Western World and The Shadow of the Glen Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: Oct. 8-11, 8 p.m., Sat., Oct. 11, 2 p.m. and Sun., Oct. 12, 3 p.m. 2008
Price: $75

Having been around since 1975 in Galway, Ireland and given Martin McDonagh his debut with The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1996, the theater company Druid makes its belated Bay Area debut with a John Millington Synge double bill. The Irish playwright's 1907 comedy The Playboy of the Western World, in which a wanderer's tale of having murdered his father makes him the toast of County Mayo, is performed along with the short play The Shadow of the Glen, about a young wife's response to the dead body of her elderly husband, and vice versa. There's also a free talk Friday, October 10 at 6 p.m. about the company's 2005 DruidSynge marathon of the entire Synge oeuvre, made somewhat easier by the fact that he died at 37 with six plays under his belt. October 8 to 12 at the Roda Theatre (2025 Addison St., Berkeley) or 510-642-9988.
