The Philistines and Truxton

When: Mon., Dec. 3, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $5

Before it got a bad name, emotionally-charged indie rock was the stuff that could simultaneously crush you with the weight of the world and lift you upward, making you feel like everything and anything was within reach. That was the distinct feeling I got when I first saw Truxton, an Oakland band that's been slogging away in relative (and unfortunate) obscurity for the last decade-plus. Led by vocalist/guitarist Hansi Armentrout, the band excels in heartstrings-tugging emotional depth and anthemic guitars; its 2012 single, "Long Time No See," features Armentrout's soaring falsetto, swirling arpeggios, and driving rhythms, climaxing into a bittersweet lament to Let the Dilaudid do her work. After fifteen years in Oakland, Armentrout recently announced he's moving to Richmond, Virginia. The band, he said, will attempt to be bi-coastal, and is currently working on a new album. In the meantime, catch Truxton's last California show at El Rio (3158 Mission St., San Francisco) on Monday, Dec. 3, with The Philistines and Rags to Widows (also featuring Armentrout). 7 p.m., $5.
