The Phenomenauts

When: Fri., Jan. 27, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $10

Think of Friday, Jan. 27's Gilman show as a look into the past, present, and future of local punk: first, you've  got long-running, well-loved geek-rockers The Phenomenauts — a favorite of every checkered-Vans wearing child of Berkeley in the late Nineties and early 2000s — as well as their newest side project-reincarnation, the Started-Its, which also includes members from another local legend, Nothing Cool. Then there's incendiary Oakland queercore act The Younger Lovers, plus the band that basically founded the genre some ten years earlier, Pansy Division, and the bill's rounded out by Berkeley upstarts Emily's Army, which features none other than Joey Armstrong, son of Green Day's Billie Joe. Fitting that it's actually a birthday party for longtime 924 Gilman fixture Punk Rock Joel, which also means there'll be free cake. You have basically no excuse not to go. At 924 Gilman, (924 Gilman St., Berkeley); all ages. 8 p.m., $10-$12.
