Drama, Romance
The Other Boleyn Girl is supposed to be a sultry tale of politics and court intrigue set during the twilight of the Catholic Church’s hold over England, but this period drama starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson –- a lame prequel by virtue of subject matter to Elizabeth, since it’s about how the Virgin Queen’s mother, Anne Boleyn, became the wife of Henry VIII and queen of England before being beheaded -– couldn’t raise even a nun’s temperature. Rather than acknowledge the earth-changing ramifications of the Boleyn sisters’ affair with Henry, like the formation of the Church of England and the couple hundred years of wars that followed, director Justin Chadwick seems to actively avoid the epic for the small and petty (115 min.).
