Pretty damn creepy. A yuppie couple and their young son move into a former home for afflicted children on the seacoast of Asturias in northern Spain, and soon the son’s imaginary playmates begin to multiply. Could it have anything to do with the mother’s history with the forbidding old place? Director Juan Antonio Bayona and screenwriter Sergio G. Sánchez take a few cues from executive producer Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), but mostly pile on the cobwebs, dark cubbyholes, and general gothic mustiness, with fewer pop-up shocks but more deep-down psychological dread than the usual dead-kids horror movie. The tactic works. Starring Belén Rueda (The Sea Inside), Fernando Cayo, and Roger Príncep (100 min., 2007).
