Comedy drama, Thriller
A married woman (Anaïs Demoustier) discovers that the husband (Romain Duris) of her recently deceased best girlfriend is a cross-dresser, and has been for years. Whereupon she begins to gravitate toward her “new girlfriend.” Sounds like a reasonable enough comic premise on the face of it, but in the hands of filmmaker François Ozon it moves a step further than most as a penetrating romantic drama. Demoustier and Duris shine brightly as the mystified Claire and would-be femme David, aka “Virginia.” Yet another contrarian variation on familiar themes by Ozon (Swimming Pool, In the House, Young & Beautiful), adapting Ruth Rendell’s novel into brave new screen territory where inner compulsions triumph. Unexplainable by routine formulas. Fine character support by Isild Le Besco and Raphaël Personnaz (108 min.).
