The New Bay Bridge

When: Aug. 27-Sept. 28 2013
Price: free
When you’re driving under a freeway overpass, through a tangle of concrete, it’s difficult to fathom the artistry of these seemingly mundane structures. But seen from above, the ramps and highways weave in and out of each other like an elegant Celtic knot. Oakland-based artist Christy Kovacs aims to call attention to this beauty through her mixed-media works, which involved blown-up and mirrored aerial images of Bay Area highways. Covering the canvas in thick, black paint, she reduces the roads to their abstract forms, highlighting their sinuous grace. These and other works by Kovacs are now on display at Vessel Gallery (471 25th St., Oakland), in an exhibit titled The New Bay Bridge. Accompanying them are works by Bay Area native John Ruszel, who celebrates the bridges of California in a similar light — as artistic statements in an industrial language. His sculptures explore engineering and geometry through sophisticated bridge-like constructions of wood, steel, and string. Collectively, the works should induce a new sense of appreciation in weary commuters.
