Action, Docudrama, Historical drama, Thriller
Lightly likable historical drama sends a squad of middle-aged, out-of-shape art experts in US Army uniforms to Europe in the waning days of WWII, to rescue thousands of priceless art works from the Nazis who stole them. When the group includes George Clooney, Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, and Jean Dujardin, we’d expect some comic high jinks to go along with the wartime action, but curiously, neither impulse really rises to the occasion. Even the lone female counterpoint to the Monument Men, a dour Parisian museum clerk played by Cate Blanchett, inspires no comic relief hanky-panky. We’re left with the search for the heisted masterpieces, a subject handled in far greater detail in the 2006 documentary The Rape of Europa. Clooney directs, from a screenplay he wrote with Grant Heslov, based on a book by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter (119 min.).
