Good Stephen King adaptations are so rare, it's almost impossible to believe that we've gotten two in one year, but that's the case, with 1408 and now The Mist. Written and directed by Frank Darabont (also responsible for King classics The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile), the latest film offering to the author's fans is about the Lord of the Flies-grade breakdown that occurs when a grocery store full of shoppers, trapped by the mysterious titular mist, are forced to contend with extra-dimensional scares and their own mounting hysteria. The dialogue is often atrocious and most of the plot points feel forced, but the scares pile up and the ending is as good as a kick to the balls (in the best possible way) (127 min., 2007).
