Science fiction
Re-release of the Nicolas Roeg/David Bowie sci-fi thingie can’t solve the movie’s coherency issues, but at least with the added footage we get to see Bowie (as a wan extra-terrestrial visitor), Candy Clark (his hotel maid girlfriend), and Rip Torn (a horny scientist) with their clothes off. Decide for yourself if that’s worth the ticket price. The lonely spaceman’s trip through New Mexico and the desert Southwest is a too-obvious stand-in for British director Roeg’s fascination/repulsion with America, and the rock-star spectacle just isn’t enough to make it work, despite Bowie’s other-worldly demeanor. The real stranger from another planet is Roeg. Also with Buck Henry and Bernie Casey. (139 min.)
